Wildlife Expert Chris Packham Visits Us
Wildlife expert and TV presenter Chris Packham visited KES Prep to officially open the School’s new wildlife hide that has been constructed within its 22 acres of ground as part of the School’s outdoor learning curriculum.
Chris Packham, a wildlife enthusiast, photographer and author with a passionate concern for conservation and the environment, met with the School’s Year 8 children to open its new bird hide in the woods. He then presented an engaging assembly to all Middle and Senior School children in Years 3 – 8.
Chris Packham says: “It is imperative to engage young people with the natural world in a direct way. They must have the opportunity to meet wildlife first hand, to touch it, feel it, smell it. Only then will they develop a deep-rooted and lasting affinity for it. And of course, now more than ever, we must ensure that they are fully briefed on all the environmental issues their generations will inherit. Theirs will be a different, and in many ways a more difficult world. KES Prep School is taking good advantage of its natural resources and the pupils clearly love that!”
KES Prep’s Head of Outdoor Learning Mr Caie’, says: “This was an excellent opportunity to welcome Chris Packham to KES Prep and we are grateful to Chris for giving up time in his day to visit us. During his visit, he engaged our Year 8 students with principles of spatial heterogeneity and discussed the importance of the habitat management we are undertaking. His visit enthralled and inspired both pupils and teachers alike.”
The School’s exciting and unique outdoor programme enables children to become responsible stewards of their own natural environment. By learning outside, children try new skills, measure and take risks, respond to a variety of challenges and contribute to the maintenance and development of the wild side of their school. KES Prep believes successful learning takes place when children are happy. Its woods, with its new wildlife hide, outdoor classroom, fields, ponds, stream and farm all offer the perfect opportunity for children to nourish their souls and ensure they flourish in both in and outside the classroom every day.
KES Prep in Romsey is a co-educational independent school set within 22 acres of beautiful parkland, playing fields, woodland and wetland that allows for exploration and the development of a love of learning. It is the preparatory school to King Edward VI, Southampton.
KES Prep holds regular open mornings, which take place throughout the term, with each event tailored to different areas of the school. These mornings are an excellent way to visit the school, meet the staff and children and explore the facilities and extensive grounds. Their Registrar, Miss Harrington, would be delighted to answer any questions and is contactable on 01794 528360, or email: registrar@stroud-kes.org.uk.
